PSY 3171 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Impulsivity, Bsc Young Boys, Etiology
Document Summary
Six-month prevalence for any of the disorders is 18% Conduct disorders and hyperactivity were more frequent in boys. For boys, it (conduct disorder and hyperactivity) is higher in younger boys. Conduct order alone is higher in older boys. Involves age-inappropriate levels of inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. Close to 40% of adhd children are also diagnosed with conduct disorder. With adhd and cd, the hyperactivity translates to socially inappropriate behaviours. Looking at behaviour problems, inattention, impulsivity, poor school performance, and emerging alcohol abuse (by 8-10 years) Heritability of adhd has been estimated between 30-50% Elements of heritability are important for adhd to be diagnosed properly. Smaller right frontal region and a smaller right side to the striatum. These areas of the brain are involved with inattention. Ritalin then dexidrene (dexidrene used to replace ritalin when older) Inattentive adhd may respond better to different drugs, other then ritalin. Counselling is important for parents since kids are so draining and require more resources.
