Human neuropsychology is the study of neural mechanisms underlying human behaviour. The discipline is based on a systematic analysis of disturbances of behaviour following alterations of normal brain activity by disease, damage, or experimental modification. i. e. the relationship between the brain and behaviour. American approaches to neuropsychological assessment stemmed from discipline of psychology and used statistical techniques for defining organic impairment . The neuropsychologist draws conclusions based on scores obtained on standardized testing procedures. Each test has cut-off scores for impaired or not impaired, sometimes performance is timed e. g. halstead-reitan battery. Russian approach to neuropsychological assessment stemmed from disciplines of neurology and psychoanalysis under leadership of a. r. Developed from single case studies (emphasized careful, intensive observations) Based on generating and testing of hypotheses to guide clinical exploration, diagnosis and treatment.
