He studied the lives (l-data) of extraordinary people to learn the conditions in which they grew to perhaps give the same opportunities to other people. See figure on p. 178 of textbook. People have a drive to satisfy basic needs first, and if given the chance, then will satisfy the more psychological ones. Basic needs create more motivation to fulfil them.
