DSM-5 definition:
-Onset: developmental period (<18)
-Deficits in intellectual and adapt functioning
Deficits are present without ongoing support
Present in many environments
Confirmed by clinical assessment and individualized, standardized intelligence testing
Prevalence: 1% in North America
What is considered sexual abuse?
Emotional/physical abuse
Coercive sex/rape
Unsolicited contact (touching, kissing, groping, etc.)
Sexual intimidation/threats
Pornography - unsolicited pornography, being sent it without wanting it
Name calling
Pulling up clothes/undressing
*Any sexual act without consent
Prevalence of Sexual Abuse in Populations with IDD
Individuals with IDD report experiences of sexual abuse 3x more often than those without IDD
Abuse is not different - amount of people who report it are different
Philippines: more women with IDD being sold for prostitution
Norway: 80% of individuals with IDD reported being sexually abused during childhood
UK: 1400 new cases/year
