Document Summary

Chapter 5 physical development: birth, motor, skills and growth. Labour at full term and at preterm appears to be initiated by changes in the fetal brain and linked to specific genes. Chemicals are released that signal the muscles of the uterus to contract rhythmically, every 15-20 mins and then at shorter intervals. 8-16 hours for the 1st baby and half the time for the other baby. The first step and the longest early contractions start to narrow the uterus and dilate the cervical opening; ends the cervix is fully dilated , intense contractions typically 2-3 mi ns apart. The second step fetus passes through the cervix and ends when the baby has been delivered (cid:498)afterbirth(cid:499) Third step delivery of the placenta and related other membranes, Ultrasound umbilical cord/heart beat/activity through the abdomen. On the fetus, reflected during the birth process in an abnormal fetal heart rate.
