PSY 3102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Homeostasis, Social Skills
Document Summary
Transformational perspective: underlying assumption: that con ict must be felt with, otherwise it could deal to problems, expression: necessary to alleviate built up tension, avoidance: prevents the release of tension and leads to problems. Expression increases intimacy through being open and sharing feelings. Avoidance of con ict can be counted productive to closeness and intimacy. Dealing with con icts is a social skill that can be learned, we are not born with this ability. Rusbult model: proposes that thinking about con icts in terms of expression and avoidance is too simplistic. For example: expression may be only bene cial to the person expressing emotions, may not be as good for the partner (if one partner is constantly unloading on the other). Engagement in con ict can be good or for ill intent depending on the situation. This model proposes an alternative model with two dimensions (active vs. passive/constructive vs. destructive)
