Costa and mccrae are strong believes of the big five personality traits: also acknowledge that characteristic adaptations are also part of personality. Characteristic adaptations = sct goals, motivation, social processes, etc: adaptations that are characteristic of the situation, mischel, bandura, how you interpret situations and decide to change behaviour across situations. In the same situations, people have different goals so they adapt differently. Traits = eysenck, cattell, allport, goldberg, costa & mccrae. Self = different selves, so different motivations. Biography = life narratives and personal life story (mcadams) Conclusion: everything interacts and influences each other, which is why it"s difficult to study personality. Why their model is distinct = biology & environment causes of personality: traits (ex: big five) are only caused by biological factors.
