Lecture 9 attention (cont. ) (february 23, 2016) Selection can occur very early, meaning we focus on information at the level to be extracted. Findings show that meanings can influence our attention. Expectation means that there is a specific cue/stimulus with a specific meaning that is expected: influences attention. Expectation is not fully under control of our consciousness. The challenge = although we have control over attention, we don"t have full control of it. We have to understand what is involved in the process of attention to understand what attention is. To assess attention, we have to consider the task. In a sense, blocking information coming from a channel influences our perception so that the information will not be perceived. 2: partially perceived = we did not fully detect it, perception is boosted by pre-activation, the brain network/receptors associated with the recognition of a cue (ex: of a letter) was already activated.
