Initially, some english canadians struggled to find ways to do so. English-canadian resistance to the quebec question hardened, thanks in large part to the leadership of pierre elliott trudeau. Thus, as quebec francophones have become more and more insistent on some recognition of their vision, english canada has become more and more resistant to making any room for it-as the meech lake accord debacle clearly demonstrated.
