The invention of hinduism: orientalists were the first to suggest a local religion (religion was seen by the locals as ???, most people accepted orientalsit"s hinduism. The role of colonial policies and structures: christian missions and british imperialism: missionaries were told to stay back but eventually they were needed to help manage the colony, missionaries: convert the heathen versus british raj: managing religion . The arya samaj and mass hinduism: basically aryan maske das hinduism, a model hybrid religion. Wants as many ppl to get classified as hindu to get more power from british: basically reimagining hinduism as a missionary religion. Justifies it by saying ppl have strayed from path of hinduism, targets muslims, low-caste, Sikhs (but they are confused as to why: debate on if sikhs are hindus. Formula for nationalist movements = concepts that indians are one ppl: want to get rid of british indian nationalism growing in 19th century, for a westphalian state.
