This course will focus on giving you critical reading, thinking, interpreting, and communication skills that will be necessary for all of your other courses. We will be using fiction to help us practice these skills, as reading literature is universal enough (and hopefully enjoyable) to be useful for students in all disciplines. We will read and analyze a selection of short stories and two longer works a graphic novel and a novel. Two essay assignments and an in-class seminar will help you to develop your ability to communicate clearly and coherently at an appropriate academic level. Classes will consist of a mixture of lectures and discussions concerning the assigned readings. Texts available at benjamin books, 122 osgoode st. Because so much of our class is dependent on in-class work, attendance is mandatory.
