SCS 2150 Lecture 13: SCS2150 -- March 6 and 9 2017
Document Summary
Scs2150 -- march 6, 2017 & march 9. Positivist, deduction, numbers, thin description, test theory and research hypothesis (vs having research qs and creating ideas after data is collected -- Hc documentary had qualitative approach), large n cases (qualitative is small n) Measure concepts -- ideas i. e. love, gender, crime, happiness, etc. We measure concepts so we can see differences among people or issues, countries, etc. Measurement allows differences to be represented accurately. Allows us to estimate causality or correlation and its strength. Coding -- transforming data into numbers (variables = measurement for concepts. I. e. 0 means good, 5 means terrible) Measurements to understand or quantify social phenomena/interrelated concepts. Dependent variable = the one we want to explain; assumed to be dependent on independent variable. Independent variable = presumed to affect dependent variable, use this variable to explain dependent variable. Quantitative research aims to be able to make generalizations. Try to find laws that apply to large number of people.
