Chapter 16 -- the ethics behind the stem cell debate. Personal ethics -- uneven access and incomplete science. I. e. umbilical cord stem cells have low likelihood of helping childhood disease, risk of cancer, marketing, financial conflicts (american academy of pediatrics) Stem cells reproduce and divide so do cancer cells! Don"t know unless we discuss the ontological status of the embryo utilitarianism: need to also see the benefits outweigh the negatives. Vs kantian people are never means to an end. Catholic -- stem cell harvesting seen as abortion. Vs viewing human life as not harmonized at conception. Religious extremes and kantian ideas seem to have many things in common (though for different reasons) Need to protect human dignity (against stem cell use -- leon kass via kant) Very little distinction between adults and humans -- speciesism. Cdn law allows stem cell research with leftover ivf embryos, not specifically created ones. Quebec showed the strongest support, ~60% of cdns in general support.
