Structured interviews: all respondents asked exactly the same questions in the same order, purpose: produce standardization in asking of questions and recording answers. Intra - interviewer variability interviewer not consistent in asking questions or recording answers. Inter interviewer variability inconsistency between multiple interviewers: data entry mistakes, use one interview: cheaper, and less variability. Interviewee chooses which category to put self in: closed (fixed-choice, pre-coded) questions, limited number of choices, east to process, open questions, more chance of variation. In person: most ideal: face to face preferred for academic research, by telephone: bored, can hang-up, cheaper, quicker, larger geographic area. Telephone disadvantages: exclude those without telephones (poor, unlisted numbers), hearing impaired, hard to sustain for long periods (20-25 min, harder to deal with sensitive issues, difficult to ensure person is actually the one targeted, cannot use visual aids.
