SCS 2150 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Scatter Plot, Null Hypothesis, Linear Regression
Document Summary
Nominal: the only difference that exists is being in one category or another: categories cannot be ordered by rank, cannot do arithmetic or mathematical operations with the categories, example: gender categories of male and female. Statistical programs: spss, stata, etc. (often misused) (cid:862)lies, da(cid:373)(cid:374)ed lies a(cid:374)d tatisti(cid:272)s(cid:863: data can be falsified (lying about postal code) Median: middle score when all scores have been arrayed in order (if even number of scores, it is the mean of two middle scores: can be used with ordinal or interval/ratio data. Mean: sum of all scores divided by the number of scores: can be used with interval/ratio data, vulnerable to outliers (extreme scores) Bivariate analysis: determines whether there is a relationship between two variables, determination of a relationship is not proof of causality, contingency tables (cross-tabulations) Can be used for any variable type. Normally used for nominal or ordinal data. Note: the independent variable is normally displayed as a column variable.
