Selecting a representative sample to administer the survey on. Close-ended questions present the respondent with a set of answers from which to choose. Is the most common type of question asked. Open-ended questions are left completely to the respondent. Is dif cult as the interviewer to convert answers into numerical data. Used in survey research but much less often. Data are gathered, then themes or categories of behaviour are discerned. An open ended question on the legalization of marijauna might have coded very hostile opposition , indifferent , etc) Each code would then be assigned a number and is then recorded in a le each time the category is encountered. List of categories has to be exhaustive. Coders should be provided with a coding frame or manual that establishes clear rules about how codes should be applied. Population: all cases about which one seeks knowledge. Representative sample: a sample containing the essential characteristics of the population.
