SOC 1101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Dependent And Independent Variables, Content Analysis
Document Summary
Data are empirical facts when in relation to theory. Many little things form and reinforce our power dynamic (i. e. someone having a microphone and someone does not) Empirical research: findings are based on the assumption that knowledge is best gained by direct, systemic observation: we (cid:272)a(cid:374)(cid:859)t just sit i(cid:374) a (cid:396)oo(cid:373) a(cid:374)d (cid:373)ake guesses. We need to see the results, the policies, the interview transcripts. Normative approach: based on religion, tradition or authority to answer important (cid:395)uestio(cid:374)s. what (cid:449)e pe(cid:396)(cid:272)ei(cid:448)e to (cid:271)e (cid:858)(cid:374)o(cid:396)(cid:373)al. (cid:859) Hypothesis: tentative statements about the relationship between two or more concepts or variables. Descriptive studies: describe social reality or provide details about a group, practice, or event. Research is the process of systematically collecting information: has social implications, political implications, economical implications. It is how we engage in collecting research. Independent variable: presumed to cause or determine a dependant variable.
