Document Summary

What is sociology: ongoing activity, changes all the time, etymology: linguistics associated with words; scientific study of society (linguistic origins, sociology: systematic study of human society and social interactions. What do sociologists do: make observations of social patterns of behaviours that may repeat themselves, things happen to you differently between gender, sexual orientation, class, (social categories) Ex: women pay more for haircuts and to have clothing dry-cleaned than men. Black men are more likely to be pulled over at night than white men. Investigate and challenge commonly held assumptions (prior beliefs) Ex: male nurses are presumed to be gay (not true), nursing presumed to be a woman"s job, involved caregiving and underpaid for the work done. Look at how assumptions are fed and maintained by society, look at how male nurses try to undo the perceptions. Sociology enables us to better understand the world in which we live and to understand the people we live with.
