The origins of sociology: social fact, social conflict, social action. Relatively recent, in 1838 - when sociology became a name for a certain aspect of philosophy. There have been philosophers before sociology who have made observations about society / social behaviour. Example of an early sociologist: shakespeare (1564-1616) - observed the people around him, provided insight into the human condition - passions, montesquieu (1689-1755) - argued that human laws embodied cultural values, morals. None of these philosophers observed society from a sociological point of view - they analyzed society the way it was - they imagined the ideal society. In the 19th century, sociology developed among 4 striking / important events: We needed these events for sociology to emerge. (france, england, germany canada, the us: industrialization and urbanization process, political revolutions during the 19th century. The process from which a community goes from relying mostly on agriculture and handmade products to manufacturing and related industries.
