Social norms shared and accepted standard and social expectations. Crimes are understood as deviant, but not all deviant acts are crimes. Perceptions of deviance can change over time. Act itself isn"t inherently deviant, but people"s reactions to the specific act make it deviant. The particular act needs to be viewed from the standpoint of the culture within which it takes place: what is socially acceptable differs among cultures. Moral entrepreneurs person who influences or changes the creation or enforcement of a society"s moral codes. People who act deviantly are subject to social controls, informally and formally. Formal social control: criminal justice system, social workers and psychiatrists. Utilitarianism behaviour is not the result of supernatural or other-worldly forces but is purposeful.
