Category of people who are social disadvantaged. Membership has 2 components: group lacks social power and is definable as being distinct from the majority (category of people who are socially advantaged_ Not the # of people in the group that makes it a minority, but their lack of power. Are definable recognizably different from the majority. Still remain at higher risk for illness and die younger than the c"dan population as a whole. 1 in 4 earns less than /hour. Historically they were a group of people that were physically and genetically distinguished from other groups: typically, in skin colour, hair texture and facial features. Scientists now say that race is socially constructed due to concepts now such as biracial, multiracial and racially hybrid. Since members of minority groups are perceived as different, over time they may feel different and begin to assume the attributes that others credit them with self-fulfilling prophecy.
