SOC 1101 Lecture 9: Class 9
Document Summary
The socialization process: from the cradle to the grave. Last class - culture is a human structure that is created, learned shared from person to person. Includes all the ways of knowing, acting, thinking, feeling that we acquire as embers of society. Learning how to walk, talk, write, smile, dream, sort things out, re ect is always acquired or done in interaction with others. Seemingly natural behaviours have to be acquired to some extent. We do not have instincts that dictate how we should behave. This is learned - no one is born knowing how to do it, people can forget it. Unlike other living species whose behaviour is biologically set, humans rely on other patterns. Socialization - the lifelong process through which individuals acquire a self-identity and the physical, mental and social skills needed for survival in society. Begins at birth or even sooner and it lasts your whole life.
