SOC 2103 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Menopause, Gender Role, Sexual Assault
Document Summary
Bad relationship originally with your parents, continues when you have to take care of them. They are vulnerable, kids may come to resent the fact that you have to care for them. It is expensive to modify your house for the elderly. Care centres are very expensive and not affordable for all. Kids are considered to be mishandling when they encourage or enable them. Transportation is not always available, some places dont have paratranspo for instance. Passive neglect: unintentionally ignored or forgotten, not done with malice. Active neglect: financial exploitation, withholding medicine, food, assistance. Can cause shame, a lack of feeling independent. The caregiver may feel alienated from their parents as the relationship can change drastically. Struggles with dementia, parents not recognizing you, this can be traumatic for the caregiver and lead to abuse. This is a conception that may have come to being because familial violence was more hidden in the past and considered a private issue.
