Focuses on social interactions and reactions, not just indiv. Distinguishes between deviant acts and deviant careers: just cause you smoke, doesn"t mean you"ll become a huge drug dealer. Law enforcement is based on behaviour, not prejudice. Self-labelling does not affect behaviour: others have to give you the label. You can"t call yourself a pothead, people have to give you that label. Crime is based on personal and situational factors, not self-image or labels. People in power give you labels: ex. Judges, friends, teachers, adults, parents: certain labels can be broken if you have enough power. You can get rid of your label if you don"t care enough and have enough power. (kim kardashian) Phenomenology: the descriptive study of experiences, how people experience deviance. Ethnomethodology: an examination of methods people commonly use to sustain some kind of consensus of the world and to solve problems characterized by highly irrational features.
