(lambert was originally studying stuttering and its stigmatization. ) Howard becker: stigma: degradation ceremonies such as court proceedings. Saying someone is a convict, or making fun of someone, is a degradation ceremony. Retrospective reading: reassesses past behavior in light of deviant status (thinking i was previously cheating, though emotionally, since i currently an a cheater, physically).
