SOC 2111 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Nonprobability Sampling, Quota Sampling, Sampling Error
Document Summary
Heterogenous population seek sample that represents same variations in population. Sample: group of units or cases from population. Probability sampling method: random sample epsem equal probability selection, cost and time efficient, accurate or representative (as if reached every person in population) Nonprobability sampling ( non-random ) determines whether selected: selects cases gradually, specific content of case, rarely determines sample size in advance, illuminate key features of social life. Haphazard accidental or convienience sample: cheap and quick select anyone, systematic error, misrepresents population. Quota sampling: identify relevant categories, determine sample size for each group, sample becomes fixed but still haphazard, misrepresents population. Purposive sampling: use own judgment to select cases that will be most useful or representative for study: select unique cases that are especially informative, study hidden populations , identify cases for deeper understanding. Nazilla khanlou (2005): cultural identity and self-concept for high school students exhausted. Less about generalizing results to whole population.
