Essay 1: the concept of liberty is presented by several authors discussed in the class so far. Compare and contrast the presentation of this concept from two authors that we have read in class. Be sure to include some discussion of the following. Responsibilities of the individual vs. society: locke and rousseau, mill is the most direct in talking about liberty. Essay 2: the essence of human nature is debated among enlightenment scholars. Specifically, the standpoints of hobbes, locke and rousseau are often presented as differing and complementary. Society that would benefit the whole and not a society of war: discuss all three their standpoints, go in depth in second question. This will be the bulk as you go in depth on one standpoint.
