She was the grand niece of harriet beecher stowe who wrote uncle toms cabin. Gilman was influenced by marx, engels, and darwin. Marx discussed capitalism and the production of social relations while engels studied the family and gender relations under capitalism. She said the out humanness lies not in who we are as individuals but in our social relations. History has been made and written by men. It"s his story in a man-made world as opposed to being gynocentric. The man was accepted as the race type and as the measure and model of humanity. That"s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind. She differentiates between human nature and sex nature. Human nature is a joint enterprise of women and men. Dubois looks at language and how the male sex (gender) is used as the norm.
