The majority pend their lives producing wealth which is ultimately not theirs to own or enjoy. The worker is free" free to sell labor on the market. Cannot leave the system upon which their livelihood depends. Workers collectively produce the wealth of the world but are dependent on the capitalist for the means of subsistence (wages/salary) The protestant ethic and the spirit of capitalism. There are multiple ways that power can be exercised and distributed: impossible to reduce the organization of society to one single dimension i. e. ownership or non-ownership of the means of production. Classes, status groups and parties are phenomena of the distribution of power within a community . Status groups makes up the social order, classes the economic order, and parties the legal/political order: each order effects and is affected by the other.
