SOC 3116 Lecture 5: (5) Old Media New Media - What’s the Difference pt.3 & Traditional Media and Contemporary Society
Document Summary
09/23/16 (5) old media/new media: what"s the difference? (cont. ) This technology was revolutionary because it did not need to be connected to a wire in order to receive a signal (wired connection); the signal was received through airwaves. The only wire that was needed for this to function was a wire for power. Broadcasting stations would broadcast their content over airwaves to people who had a radio. This meant that as long as your radio could receive those airwaves, you could listen to the broadcast. It established a new framework for traditional and new media that set up a relationship which shapes the balance of our engagement with media. Unlike the telegraph, it represents a form of one-way communication. The new framework relates to a contract that we have come to accept: in our consumption of media, we accept advertising in exchange for free information.
