In the social production of life, men enter into definite relations that are indispensable and independent of their will, relations of production which correspond to a definite stage of development of their material productive forces. The sum total of these relations of production constitutes the economic structure of society, the real foundation on which rises a legal and political superstructure and to which correspond definite forms of social consciousness. (max and engels, 1968:182) Independent of their will, forced into relationships and mode of production (determines the superstructure?: hunter gatherer societies have egalitarian structure, very little gender inequality, society changes the way we produce, production drives historical changes. Internal changes that come about as a result of endogenous forces: at a certain stage, material productive forces of society come into conflict with the existing relations of production, this leads to social revolution.
