Etic point of view: from the outside/observer"s point of view. How you understand the categories of being and the relationships between them. How you understand the world and everything around it. Hierarchy of creation (sacred works) shows god above humans, above animals, above nature. Small scale societies generally don"t have a hierarchal structure of beliefs. Humans are = deer = fish = bugs = plants = rocks = other humans. Everything is equal and has a role interdependent relationships. When things push against your values, what happens. Liminal / liminality: between states of being, between categories. We can"t figure them out this threatens us, threatens our structure. Example: a pregnant woman / woman on her period, in some societies is seen as powerful.
