The result of a syncretic blend of christianity (taking slaves from africa) and what was taught in africa at the time. Recognized in all cultures around the world. In western (modern) society we know that/recognize that possession used to (and still does) occur. Possessed by the muse : not a literal possession, figure of speech relating to when we become very creative/artistic when we are about to fall asleep. In the way our language works we mention that certain things can take us over (not literally) The wendigo: cannibal spirit (all evil) In a trance you remember everything (unless a posy hypnotic sense is left to make them forget), but in possession, the person who is being possessed will not remember what their body did. Glassolalia: speaking in tongues (god, as the holy spirit, speaking through someone to send a message to the congregation) willing possession.
