When people are looking for significance and they are distressed, they tend to either conserve or transform their sense of illness, self, or the sacred. The family of dean heilman and their church were opposed to biomedicine and so they did not bring dean to a doctor when he was ill. After this, they realized that dean had a condition where his blood would not clot. The parents were charged with involuntary manslaughter and endangering the welfare of the child. Dyan: she believed that any illness makes a person seem imperfect because god makes perfect people. She is even more persuaded of her outlook as a result of what happened. Rick: his religious outlook continued to be meaningful to him because his growth went away.
