The five pillars of islam (continued from lecture 6) Shahada: declaration of faith: sincerely reciting the muslim profession of faith. I testify that there is no god other than allah and muhammad is his messenger. Can be considered as a summary of the faith (this is what it is about). Shahada is said on many occasions: birth, death, conversion, but also in daily life. Is performed after sexual intercourse, menstruation, birth, fainting and death. Minor ablution: in other cases, just to wash off every day impurities. Washing of the hands, mouth, nose, face, arms, forehead and hair, ears and feet three times each in that order (for sunni muslims). If there is no water around to perform the ablution, one is allowed to wipe face and hands with sand or dust, this is called tammayum. Muslims perform the salat facing the ka"bah in mecca. Each ritual prayer consist of a certain number of movements.
