ART 1361 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Art Of Europe, Anamorphosis, Year 2000 Problem
Document Summary
The painting was commissioned by the very wealthy counts of nassau. It was made four their home, most likely in the main dining hall or the library. In their library were also mappa mundi (maps used for study of secular subjects. Due to the fact that the counts of nassau were so interested in these maps and history it is thought that they would have commissioned this piece as a talking piece. The outside of the piece was painted in grisaille (painting in grey monotone). There is an inscription along the top regarding to god and his creation of the earth. Some argue that the front is the world created by god and the inside is the creation and history of man. Some believe it is about the ephemerality of life and how humans are no different than plants and animals. Some say it is commentary on mans nature due to the crude acts.
