Dierent sites, arch contexts and quesons require dierent excavaon strategies
No substute for eld experience and the sooner you get some the be$er
Excavaon is not random everything is planned…many dierent techniques
Shovel Test Pit: This is somewhat of a tesng method to see stracaons, just to see what
needs to be done
Small Test unit: is like the same as the shovel test pit
Block Excavaon – big, full scale excavaon
Trench – big, full scale excavaon
Provenience Control:
Grid system with Datum points
Grid systems control x, y coordinates
All arbitrary
Helps control 3d locaon
Datum points help control depth or thickness of where arfacts are found
Old school technique
Now niggas use GPS and total staon
Purposes of Arch Excavaon:
Excavaon gives us control of me and space
Helps us acquire most reliable evidence for the two main kinds of info:
Human acvies at a parcular period in the past
Changes in those acvies from period to period
Horizontal/Clearing Excavaon:
Opening up large areas to reveal the horizontal extent of an arch deposit and the arrangement of
objects within the deposit.
May expose repeated reoccupaon of a site
Type of stracaon can be used to show dierent mes of reoccupaon
Vercal/Penetrang Excavaons:
Cu7ng into deep deposits to reveal, in cross secon the depth and sequencing of stracaon.
Combinaon of Clearing and penetrang excavaons:
Exposed the changes of the city of Troy
Showed how the city was constantly layered on top of older versions of the city
