Gender neutral pronouns can be they and them or even zie . The pronoun zie is practised in queer communities. They also practise saying their gender pronouns when meeting people for the first time politeness norms require you to address someone with the pronouns that they want you to use. A system, just like languages constructed within society choices are made within that system and it"s fluid, there is ascension and descension. No individual choices made, always related to the system. For anthropologists: examining in great detail, figuring out what they are doing. Questioning how gender is constructed and how not to take it for granted. Gender is not done the same way everywhere, it is different all over the world (some languages do not have gendered pronouns)
