Document Summary

Population group of individual organisms of the same species that live together in the same geographic area. Population density (aka crude density): # of individuals per unit area d=n/s (n=total # of individuals, s=space) Ecological density: individuals not normally found there estimate that does not relflct true. Organisms exist within a habitat area with particular set of features is defined both by physical (abiotic) & biological (biotic) characteristics. Clumped dispersion when organisms group together in an area: reason: for protection or to exploit a resource (crows travel in flocks, asexual reproduction. Uniform dispersion equal spacing of individuals across an area (sea lions: reason: guarding specific territory for feeding/nesting. In plants, when each individual plant is using up all the resource around it so no other could get close. Random dispersion individuals scattered randomly over an area: when habitant conditions are uniform across the area and individuals are not affected by each other, plants such as rain forest trees.
