Document Summary

Lecture 7 notes finding the way around. When you"re really small, you have a small reynold"s number: this poses different limitations that larger animals. Barnacles are limited by the viscosity of the fluid. For large animals, the limitation is inertial force (we are big animals and you need to move us) When you have a jaw, you also need to chase prey and do other things to capture the prey. The snake has an extra joint (between quadrate and supertemporal bone) allows for more opening of the joint in a wider angle. The tracheal rings are less connected so that you can expand even further. The vertebral projections crush the prey as it moves down the body. Gizzards in birds stones are introduced to break down some of the elements before the nutrients are absorbed. Ruminant digestive tract 4 different chambers and the first is the rumen which has the bacteria that can digest the food that other animals cannot.
