Document Summary

Apical meristems make up the three types of meristems: primary meristems cause primary growth, secondary meristems cause lateral growth (secondary growth , intercalary meristems cause intercalary growth (keeps grass growing on lawn) Primary meristems: originates in the process of embryogenesis, when a zygote is fertilized it forms an embryo which is surrounded by a seed in seed plants. The cells will divide and keep dividing and from the embryo when covered by the seed the cells that become the root or shoot apical meristem will already be determined. The shoot and root apical meristems both divide from the apical cell: when the seed emerges the shoot and root apical meristems is what drives the growth. They"re primary purpose is to create the primary plant body. Initials don"t just divide in this way they can divide to form two initial cells as well, or form two differentiated cells (then there would be no meristematic cells left).
