Document Summary

Long bones transmit forces along the shaft and have a rich blood supply. Medullary cavity: or marrow cavity, is a space within the hollow shaft. In life, it is filled with two types of bone marrow. Red bone marrow is highly vascular and involved in the production of blood cells. Yellow bone marrow is adipose tissue important as an energy reserve. The branching of spongy bone makes it weaker than compact bone when it is compressed from a single direction, but it is able to resist forces applied from many directions. At the femur, the spongy bond of the proximal epiphysis channels and directs the body weight to the compact bone of the diaphysis. The compact bone then passes these forces to the spongy bone of the distal epiphysis, which distributes the body weight across the articular surface of the knee. Periosteum contains an extensive network of blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, and sensory nerves.
