Document Summary

Bone is not very static even though we think of it as a structural support. We can split long bones into spongy bone (network and mesh looking) and compact bone (more yellow in the image) Between spongy bone and compact bone there"s a hollow area called the medullary cavity making blood cells (can be red bone marrow blood cells - or yellow bone storage of fats - marrow) Many different vessels in the bone bring in and take out different nutrients. Spongy bone and compact bone and periosteum are connected by vascular tissues. Going from superior to inferior periosteum, compact bone, spongy bone, medullary cavity. The bone matrix is composed of different things. The most important piece of mineral is a combination of ca, po, and oh groups. The hydroxyapatite crystals are good at protecting the bone from compressional forces (body weight: no room for twisting, it either breaks or doesn"t. Proteins give the bone a little bit of flexibility.
