Document Summary

When you reach alveoli, you bring bicarbonate back into the blood cell which is converted to co2 gas that can be delivered into alveolus. We can control the rate of our breath and force the amount of air that we take in in any given respiration cycle. The autonomic control is controlled through 3 regulatory centers. The respiratory rhythmicity centers are the drg and the vrg within the medulla oblongata. The drg control the quiet breathing at rest: not increasing tidal volume about 1000ml, no nervous system integration so the diaphragm and intercostal muscles can relax. Pneumotaxic center increases how much air passes through your lungs. Apneustic center decreases how much air passes through your lungs. The top controller is the higher center of the cerebral cortex, limbic system, and hypothalamus: ex. Metabolic rate, being scared (increase breathing increased activity of pneumotaxic center) The 3 levels of regulation can work independently or all together (remember the drg and vrg)
