Document Summary

Roughly 50% of the exam will comprise content covered after term test 2. The remaining 25% and 25% will comprise content from term tests 1 and 2 respectively. Review session - one evening before exam. Previously, we discussed that early neurobiologists relied on histology and microscopy to understand the structure and function of neural tissues. Ramon y cajal and others used the golgi stain to show that the nervous system is made up of separate cells. Neuronal tracing - looking at shapes of neurons and what they look like. Golgi stain only labelled subset of neurons because if it labelled all, then we wouldn"t see clearly so it shows certain neurons. One advancement is the implementation of fluorescent dyes. Molecules that have capability to absorb light - done through the electrons. Fluorescent dyes can be used to trace neurons. Have electrons that absorb light and emit fluorescence as they drop back down to lower energy orbitals.
