Early Embryonic Development  ovulation -> insemination -> fertilization in fallopian tubes -> embryo moves down fallopian tube -> cleavage -> compaction -> cavitation -> multicellular blastocyst -> hatching from zona pellucida Implantation of the Embryo  6-7 days after fertilization  embryo binds to uterine epithelium  can occur at ectopic sites Implantation: The Sequence of Events 1. apposition o blastocyst to the endometrial epithelium 2. adherence o adhesion molecules 3. formation of the syncytiotrophoblast o fusion of cytotrophoblast cells forming multinucleate cell 4. penetration o invasive syncytiotrophoblast makes contact with maternal blood vessels 5. decidual reaction o uterine tissue set up immunological barrier (decidua), maternal portion of placenta Cell Adhesion Molecules and Implantation  L-selectin (Lymphocyte selectin)  o lectin o present in blastocyst o binds to sugar groups in extracellular matrix of endodermal cells o weak, initial adherence  Trophinin  o homophilic o blastocyst and maternal o stronger The Fetal/Maternal Interface  placenta and chorion prevent immune response from mother  o chorion is a group of extraembryonic membranes
