CHM110H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Experiment Iv, Dichloroacetic Acid, Joule
Document Summary
The purpose of this experiment is to analyze the thermal energy change when neutralizing an acid and base. The thermal energy change can then be used to calculate the enthalpy and entropy. This experiment consists of 2 parts; the first part being calorimetry of hot and cold water, and the second part being calorimetry of the neutralization of hydrochloric acid, and trichloroacetic acid with sodium hydroxide. The next step is to assemble the calorimeter, by putting the coffee cups inside each other, turning on the magnetic stirrer, and placing the thermometer in the calorimeter through the hole in the cardboard. Next, the cold water is placed in the calorimeter, and the hot water is quickly poured into the calorimeter, so that heat is not lost between the transfers from the heater to the calorimeter. The stop watch is started as soon as the hot water begins to be poured, and the time taken to pour it is recorded.
