There"s a reason that aphrodite has so many birth stories about her, because she is essenially the life force of the planet. In hesiod, she always has to be there, because she is the primordial life force. Eros is love that will be returned to you, anteros is unrequited love. She balances the two on the scales, indicaing her role in everyday life. In the tales, however, she is a much more frightening and vengeful character. Aphrodite strikes her with a love of the bull. She asks for a special cow suit and that results in the birth of the minotaur.
