Measures that don"t require the researcher to intrude in the research context. Often used in conjunction with other more interactive methods. Almost anything that has been created or modified by people can be a source of data. We can learn about people who created a document. Analyzing what they choose to represent: i. e. Media researchers often use the concept of frames to conduct their analysis. Frames shape media article by determining what will be discussed, how it will be discussed, and how it will not be discussed (atheide and michalowski 1999: 478) Frames contribute to particular definitions of the situation, which have consequences for individuals and societies. E. g how gender roles and ideals are implied and how gender displays influence other areas of our social realities. Subtle or implicit meanings that require interpretation. Researcher decides if something in the text has more meaning i. e. sarcasm. We now have a treasure trove of new data for unobtrusive research.
