Document Summary
Consistency theories (congruity theory, cognitive dissonance, etc. ) Throughout our lives we have fundamental need we need to be realized, we need consistency. We want behaviour, actions, and thoughts to align with each other. Bad feeling - mild psychological distress or dissonance. Minimizing internal conflicts through adjusting appraisals and/or behaviors. We resolve/reduce dissonance by adjusting attitudes and behaviors. Changing the behavior or rationalizing it (changing our appraisals/interpretations) Either try to change your thoughts (trying to live a healthy lifestyle, but smoke a cigarette - promise myself not to smoke again or try to rationalize behaviour) Every time we buy something, we try to engage in thought patterns to rationalize behaviour - natural and common human tendency. Induce dissonance < create imbalance < motivate behavior. Looks are important < you don"t look good enough. Health is important < you"ve unhealthy habits. Being slim is trendy < you"re fat, etc. You are not as successful or socially responsible as you should be, slimmer.
